Attack on Chu Lai Air Base - February 23, 1969

Chu Lai Air Base was a military airport in Quang Tin Province, RVN, operated by the U.S. Marine Corps between 1965 and 1970. In 1969, there was a Logistical Support Unit-3 (LSU-3) located on the base operated by 1st Force Service Regiment, Force Logistic Command, Fleet Marine Force. Its mission was to provide supporting services to Marine Division/Wing Elements of the III Marine Amphibious Force which included graves registration, bath and laundry, air delivery, material handling, mess, utilities, and supporting services for the operation of the III Marine Amphibious Force. At 6:50 AM on February 23, 1969, the LSU-3 area came under an enemy rocket attack. Three LSU-3 officers were killed in the barrage. They included CAPT Wesley E. Flanigan, Officer-in-Charge, LSU-3; 1LT Ronald L. Smith, Officer-in-Charge, Supply Section; and CWO Clyde Callahan, Officer-in-Charge, Organic Supply and Mess Section.
