My Dearly Missed Childhood Friend

I lived in the house directly east of Cody's house, and many of my summertime afternoons were spent with Cody. Some of my favorite memories are of Cody and I riding his horse, Champion, on country roads by our homes. I can still see his wonderful smile and hear his warm laughter.

I moved to town when I started eighth grade, and my afternoons with Cody ended. He was the best childhood friend that I ever had, and he was the first boy that ever paid attention to me. I couldn't have asked for anyone better for either "honor". Cody has stayed in my thoughts and prayers during all these years. I visit his grave from time to time, and the tears still fall.

My cousin happened to marry a high school classmate of Cody's. His wife was so fond of Cody that she named one of her sons after him. Cody's namesake, Cody Quaka, is a warm hearted, Christian man with a character deserving of being named after Cody, Cody Quaka served in the Navy and now lives with his family in Pennsylvania. Whenever I am with my cousin's son, I see traces of Cody's smile and faintly hear Cody's laugh.

I know that I will see Cody again when my time on earth is over. I can't wait to share another afternoon with him....a true Champion to me.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Cody Ray Calkins, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
