Ground Casualty

SFC William E. Allen was a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 54th Transportation Battalion. On December 26, 1969, while on his third tour of duty in Vietnam, SFC Allen was operating an ammunition truck in Binh Dinh Province, RVN, when it struck a landmine and overturned. Allen was critically wounded in the blast and hospitalized. Injuries to his lower extremities necessitated the amputation of one of his legs. A blood clot resulted which caused his death on December 30, 1969. Allen reportedly had been wounded twice before during his service in the Korean War.
