We Will Remember

I had the honor to say your name during the 40th anniversary commemoration of the Wall. May you rest in peace.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Whenever I see the wall

Just as in the movie Full Metal Jacket, the last night of boot camp in August of 1966, we were herded together and told our MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) and next assignment after infantry training at Camp Pendleton. I and another boot, Tommy Allen – nice, funny, kind of quiet guy from Ohio and with one year of college just like me – were told that we were going to be 0300’s. Basic riflemen and that we were to be November replacements in Vietnam. Of the 80 some guys in our training platoon, we were the only two that received this specific assignment. Half way through infantry training my MOS and assignment was changed. I went on to become a radar tech. He went on to Vietnam as a rifleman. I am a Vietnam Era Vet. Aside from a very brief liaison assignment, I was never stationed in Nam. I found Tommy's name on the wall years later. Rest in peace buddy. I think of this whenever I see the wall...
