Albert I will always remember you. We had a lot of fun in home room all those years at Baldwin. Whenever I put flowers on your grave at Maui Veterans Cemetery I can always feel that you are looking down at me. Your classmate Charla(Contadt) Miguel. Rest In Peace dear Albert.

We Will Remember

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Cpl Albert Cabanayan (21) was born on February 07, 1945 to MR. and Mrs. Jose Cabanayan in Kahalui, Hawaii. “He was very popular in high school. He was an active student, active in band and well liked. He was one of those students that was destined to be one that was "most likely to succeed." India Company had landed with 3rd Battalion in Vietnam at the end of January during Operation Double Eagle. On March 4, Operation UTAH was launched under the command of Task Force Delta in the Son Thinh District of Quang Ngai Province where the Marines would encounter elements of the 21st NVA Regiment. India Company was helicopter-ed to the area of operations the evening of 4 March, and the Marines moved forward on their search and destroy mission at first light on March 5. While sweeping through the Chau Ngai village complex, India Company engaged elements of the 21st NVA Regiment in a battle that would last for more than 8 hours. The enemy was in well prepared defensive positions with fields of fire that prevented the forward movement of Marines without taking casualties. By nightfall the fighting slacked, 17 men of Company were killed during the battle and many more were wounded. Cpl. Cabanayan died on March 05, 1966 from hostile rifle fire on Operation Utah near Hill 50, Chau Nhai 3, Quang Ngai, Vietnam.Albert was the first Maui Marine to die in Vietnam. His sister Sylvia Cabanayan, while a student at the University of Hawaii helped to organize an R&R program for wounded servicemen at Tripler Hospital in Maui. Cpl. Albert Cabanayan had served 2 year in the Marine Corps and is honored on the Vietnam Memorial Wall Panel 5E, Line 11
