His Battery Commander
Cpl Butts was assigned to my Battery, B-2-11 FA, we had withstood enemy ground attacks at FSB Jack, whip and Lash, Prior to moving in to the A Shau to support 3/187 Inf. in the Battle for Dong Ap Bia. The Battery was split with a couple of guns on FSB Birchasgarden, one of which was the section that Gary was assigned to. There was a Tragic fire on that Base that Took the life of Gary.
He was a fine young American, great attitude and always smiling. It truly was a waste of an outstanding young man. I Cried the day I gave his eulogy, and there are tears in my eyes as I type today some 33 years later.
My only solace is that i am sure God takes these kind of soldiers to some special place where they can be in a Brotherhood and happy for eternity. "We few, we happy few, we band of Brothers"
If any of Gary's Family would like to contact me they can do so at [email protected]
