Thanks

Dear Ssgt Gary Butt,
Thank you for your service as an Airborne Qualified Infantryman. As we celebrate Labor Day, and enjoy our freedom, it is important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

I live because of your sacrifice!

I joined the "Herd" on March 31st, 1971. You were my squad leader and recalled to me as the Canadian, named Butch. On April 2nd we went into action and the following morning you and many others were killed or wounded.

You should have left for R&R on that day, but instead, moved your squad to the site of the ambush and in support of your fellow soldiers. A devastating, 50 caliber round made a side entry and took your life.

As promised, the first Huey carried you away, but not in the manner or to the destination you'd planned.

My memories of those few days and that battle remain vividly etched into my persona. I assure you that your sacrifice did not go wasted. I am fortunate to enjoy the life of a grandfather because of your dedicated heroism and unselfish resolve.

For 45 years I have thanked you!

My family and I are forever grateful!

Welcome Home Butch!
