honoring you...
Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrance from your fellow soldier Chet Ziniewicz is both poignant and funny. That you died on what was to be your last day in Vietnam is especially tragic. May you rest in eternal peace.

THANK YOU
Dear Spec 5 Kermit Burkey,
Thank you for your service as a General Vehicle Repairman. It is important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear SP5 Kermit Edward Burkey, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter

a "story" for kermit.
we served together in vietnam with the 1st air cav. 5/7 in1967. i was told that you were on your way to get on a helicopter and then an aircraft to take you back home, when the truck that you were riding in ran over and set off a bomb that was burried in the road.(instead of being your last day in vietnam,it ended up being your last day in this world. i didn't know you very well,we talked a few times in base camp, but i do remember you as a kind and decent person.i'm writing this on sunday, november 15th 2015. (i'm 68 years old,i was 19 when i knew you.) i have never forgotten you, you're a "key" part of my vietnam experience, and i never will forget you. i visited a "traveling" half-scale version of the "wall" (the vietnam veterans memorial) when it was displayed at lakeland college (near cleveland ohio , which is my home). i looked up your name(i only knew your last name since you never told me your first name), and found your "spot" on the wall. i just stood there crying (weeping) for quite a long time. when i finally gained my composure and was about to leave,i noticed something that brought a smile to my face even though tears were still "falling" from my eyes ; it was your first name (kermit), i remember thinking "no wonder he didn't tell people his first name","i don't think i would either if it was kermit". i hope that you "rest" in peace kermit berkey. ......from a fellow soldier and vietnam veteran. chet ziniewicz ,1st air cav.
