A soldier’s soldier
I was with Karl in the battle cited in his award citation. It was a rough day for all of us. Karl was my close friend and I was distraught when I learned that he died at the Navy hospital. He was the epitome of an Army platoon leader. He had the utmost respect of his men and was liked by all. His actions that day kept us from being over-run and, as a direct result, many of us are alive today. May God’s blessings be with his family.

An old friend
Karl Bullard. He and I were good friends and fellow members of Boy Scout troop 960, whose name was Harmony, named after the sponsor, Harmony Church near Darlington MD. He and I were fellow Senior Patrol Leaders, and our patrols often competed in various scouting skill tests. The day before he left for Viet Nam, we met for a beer at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds Officers Club. He was enthusiastic about his next mission and also to honor his father, a career soldier. I still miss him.

do not stand at my grave and weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
As long as you are remembered you will always be with us....
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
