Ground Casualty
SSG Juan V. Buendia was an infantryman serving with D Company, 299th Engineer Battalion, 937th Engineer Group, 20th Engineer Brigade. During 1967, the 299th was tasked with operational support of elements of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division in Kontum Province, RVN. The battalion concentrated on restoring roads running north, east, and west of Kontum, and even opened a section of road running west from Dak To toward the frontier with Laos and Cambodia. On July 15, 1967, Buendia was reportedly walking through elephant grass when a tree being brought down by the engineers split in two and fell on him. Critically injured, he was taken to the 18th Surgical Hospital at Pleiku with a fractured pelvis and injuries to his right leg. Buendia was administered last rites at 9:00 PM the following evening; he succumbed at 4:25 AM on July 17, 1967. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and 299thcombatengineers.com]
