Remembering An American Hero
Dear PFC Jay Q Buckwalter III, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

Marine Pfc. Jay Q. Buckwalter, 19, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay D. Buckwalter Jr., of RD 4, Manheim, Lancaster county.
Pfc. Buckwalter was killed when a truck he was driving struck a land mine on Sunday.
He was graduated from Manheim Central High School last June and enlisted in the Marines in August. He left for Vietnam on Easter Sunday.
His father, a farmer, said Pfc. Buckwalter had thought of becoming a farmer when he got out of the Marines.
In letters home, the father said, Buckwalter wrote that Vietnam was unbearably hot and that "he hates the place over there and wants to get home."
But, the father said, "He meant nothing personal by saying that he hates the place, he was just homesick, that's all."
Besides his parents, Pfc. Buckwalter is survived by three brothers, Kenneth, Robert and Jeffrey; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Quintin Buckwalter, and his maternal grandfather, Ernest Weaver.
Semper Fidelis, Marine!
