Best Friend
David and I lived across Spartan Avenue in Vandalia, Ohio from each other from kindergarten until 4th grade. We were inseparable best friends and David was at my house almost constantly (my folks were more tolerant of kids visiting than David's).
We went to the same school in first grade but had different teachers so our recesses were not the same. I still remember one time when David's class came out to the playground while my class was still there. We were so excited to play together for a few minutes.
David's family broke up when we were in 4th grade and he was sent to an orphanage. I only saw him once after that, but never forgot him and always grieved over his sad, short life.
David and my cousin Daniel Meade both died in Vietnam on the same day.
