Final Mission of LCPL Walter S. Brown

LCPL Walter S. Brown was a rifleman serving with 3rd Platoon, India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. LCPL Brown was with his unit during Operation Hastings, the effort to push back across the DMZ the increasing numbers of uniformed regular North Vietnamese Army (NVA) found south of the Demilitarized Zone. On the late afternoon of July 22, 1966, the seventh day of the operation, Brown’s platoon was on point as they moved along a stream bed approximately six miles west of Cam Lo village. As they rounded a bend, the NVA sprung an ambush on the Marines. Brown was up front and came under heavy fire. He died after being hit in the torso and head.
