That Which Makes Life Worth Living
Stoney and I were pals back in high school days, a part of a larger group of guys that lived for cars, girls, and adventure where and when we could find it. Stoney liked guns and hunting and so did I so we would would take his 56' Chevy for trips out of town where we could hunt squrrils or pheasents. We also liked war movies and were impressed by stories told by WW2 vets whom we held in high esteem. I vividly remember the day Stoney told several of us that he had joined the Marines. A few of us met up at the Richfield Pharmacy (fountain) and as we chit chatted over soft drinks he kind of sheepishly said something like: "Hey guys I joined the Marines last week". We were in disbelief because he had never mentioned interest in joining anything. It really was a bolt out of the blue. This was early summer of 65'. Stoney left for basic training in August and was back in town over Christmas. I saw him in uniform at church one night and wow he was the for real king of cool. After he had gone back, his mom, I think, told me he had turned down an offer to be a rifle instructor at Camp Pendelton choosing a combat role instead. It was a tremendous shock to hear about his death but far worse for his closely knit family members. His mom and sister Roanne were super sweet at all times and I felt crushed seeing the pain in their hearts and faces as we shared our grief together. A lot of water under the bridge since then but still you never forget a pal and the days and fun we shared that built our friendship. I look forward to our reunion, in God's Kingdom, where we will all finally know real and everlasting peace and where all wrongs will be made right. Ernie Stanley
