Ground Casualty
PFC John H. Brown was a Food Service Specialist serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Battery (HHB), 1st Battalion, 321st Artillery, 101st Airborne Division. Operation Jefferson Glenn (September 5, 1970 - October 8, 1971) was the last major operation in which U.S. ground forces participated during the Vietnam War and the final major offensive in which the 101st Airborne Division fought. The purpose of the operation was to shield critical installations in Hue and Da Nang by patrolling rocket belts along the edge of the mountains. During the 399 days of operations, the Allied troops established multiple firebases throughout Thua Thien Province and regularly encountered North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) troops. Ten days after the operation concluded (October 18, 1971), Brown died in the Hue-Phu Bai military area, 16 kilometers southeast of the Hue Citadel in Thua Thien Province. In an amended casualty document dated almost a year after his death, the Army reported that he hung himself. Brown, 19, had been in Vietnam less than two months. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
