Silver Star Medal Award

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James Edward Brooks, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Brooks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 February 1970 while serving as a squad leader with Company B, 5th Battalion, 3d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, when his platoon suddenly came under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Brooks immediately proceeded to move from position to position, directing the fire of his squad, as two helicopter gunships bombarded the enemy location less than thirty meters away. Then, with complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Brooks led his squad in an assault which completely routed the enemy force. Sergeant Brooks' gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Love you Dad

Dad, we never met, I've done things in my life that deserve a good ass whooping from you, Il'll get that in Heaven, once we finally meet! You have 3 beautiful Grandkids. My Daddy now, honored the Brotherhood wishes and raised me as his own and did the best he could but I have my Mommas wild ways....lol JJ Curely and I talk now and then, he really misses you too. Not going to get sappy, cause I know you would tell me to "suck it up" stand tall! Yea your joke! I've got a great support group but a bear hug would really be nice..... until then I will defend what the Lord has blessed me with as you did, God, Family and County. Until we finally met, save me a spot, we've got some catching up to do.., Love you, your son Jeff

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT James Edward Brooks, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
