Ground Casualty

PFC Jimmie W. Youngs was a rifleman serving with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force. During September 1968, the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines conducted a security mission on National Route QL-1, the main supply line from the Hai Van Pass at the southern boundary of Thua Thien Province northward to Phu Loc village. This was accomplished by placing platoon-sized strong points along the highway and performing aggressive small unit maneuvers to protect convoys. At the time, Youngs was near the end of his 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam when he went on sick call. He was admitted to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Station Hospital in Da Nang where he died on September 11th of encephalitis, an inflammation of brain tissue. The disease is contracted by a virus, bacterium, parasite, or other microorganism; however, in many cases the cause is unknown. Youngs was 20 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Thank You

Dear PFC Jimmie Youngs, Thank you for your service as a Rifleman. I researched you on your 75th birthday, happy birthday. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Lent has begun. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance, and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Jimmie was in my unit at Khe Sahn

Jimmie and I served together at Khe Sahn...He signed a request I sent to my mother requesting she send me my trumpet. It may have been his idea...He was a good Marine and I liked his sense of humor. I'm sad he's gone.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Jimmie Walker Youngs, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
