Dear Sp4 Lawrence Yochum, Thank you for your service as a Civil Affairs Infantryman with the 59th Scout Dog Platoon. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Lent has begun. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance, and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

On the remembrance of your 70th Birthday, your sacrifice is not forgotten.

The Fall River High School Class of 1968 will never ever forget you as long as one of us is still breathing. At our reunions each one of us remembers you and what you mean to us. We will be celebrating our 50th year since we graduated in 2018, oh how we miss you. You are forever in our hearts.

Dog handler SP4 Lawrence W. Yochum and his scout dog King (7A65) were from the 59th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog), 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On February 13, 1970, they were working with Company A, 4/21, when SP4 Yochum’s dog did an alert on a booby-trap. According to the other scout dog handler present, SGT Zimmerman, Yochum went forward to check it out and detonated the booby-trap with his rifle. He suffered fatal injuries in the blast. SGT Zimmerman and his dog Fritz (3M21) received minor shrapnel wounds in the incident. [Taken from 47ipsd.us]
