Final Mission of Maj Mannifred Yates

In 1967, the Cessna O-2A Skymaster was introduced as a replacement for the O-1 Bird Dog in the role of forward air control. The O-2A was a modified civilian Cessna 337 with an engine at each end of the fuselage. It carried more ordnance than the O-1, had more power, and was capable of longer loiter times. On September 13, 1969, an O-2A (#68-10987) from the 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron was reportedly enroute from Saigon to Nha Trang when it was hit by hostile groundfire. The pilot attempted a forced landing approximately five miles south of the capital in Gia Dinh Province, RVN. The crippled Skymaster crashed, killing three U.S. Air Force personnel aboard. The lost airmen included pilot Maj Mannifred Yates and passengers Capt Thomas W. Norman Jr. and Capt James F. Cameron. Their remains were recovered. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org and pleikuab.com]

Thank You

Dear Maj Mannifred Yates, Thank you for your service as a Tactical Aircraft Pilots. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Lent has begun. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance, and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.
