My Friend Butch
Butch was my best friend from 1951-1969. I received a letter from him written 12 days before he was killed. It started off saying he wished I was over there but then said no because it must be hell on earth. I remember In 1958 he invited me to go with his family to my first college football game which was Bear Bryant’s first year at Alabama. I was also Butch’s best man at his wedding.
I think about him often. Butch was a good man and an ordained minister.
Coach Guin Hollander and I had to go tell his father who was at work that Butch had been killed. When he saw us he started crying. He knew what our message would be.
