Final Mission of SSGT Robert L. Womack
On October 11, 1965, eleven aircraft from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 (HMM 364) departed Ky Ha for an ARVN strike/troop lift out of Quang Ngai. The mission was aborted due to weather. As the flight was returning to Ky Ha, the lead aircraft, a UH-34D (#149378), was hit by ground fire at the southern extremity of the tactical area of responsibility (TAOR). One round struck SSGT Robert L. Womack, who was riding as loadmaster in the troop compartment. The aircraft immediately diverted toward the nearest medical facility, but SSGT Womack, a veteran of 18 years’ service, died enroute. This was the first casualty sustained by the squadron since its deployment overseas on August 10, 1965. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and popasmoke.com]
