Ground Casualty

SSG Jasper M. Alexander was an Armored Reconnaissance Specialist serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. The 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment was one of two mechanized infantry units assigned to the 1st Infantry Division utilizing armored personnel carriers. The 1/16th conducted patrols, reconnaissance in force, road and bridge security, and security for land clearance in support of combat operations in Military Region III. On February 27, 1969, Alexander was found with a head injury in the latrine at his unit’s base camp at Lai Khe in Binh Duong Province, RVN, where he fell after consuming alcohol. He was transported to the 24th Evacuation Hospital on Long Binh Post for treatment of a cerebral contusion. While under the care of medical staff, he began convulsing and died 90 minutes after being admitted. Alexander, 39, was a 20-year Army veteran with service in Korea and Vietnam. He was survived by a daughter, Ms. Debbie A. Alexander of West Berlin, Germany, from a previous marriage. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
