My good friend
Dave and I were good friends at Univ of Dayton, and close buds in ROTC. We partied together, we jumped out of perfectly safe airplanes together, we went through Ranger training together. Among my memories of Dave was Rangers in particular. Dave had a twisted knee, he could hardly walk let alone run, but he would never quit. And together we muddled on through. Dave was ahead of me in the Vietnam rotation and we were all full of ourselves; ten feet tall and bulletproof, or so we thought. I got word of Dave's death shortly before I went to Vietnam and I remember it to this day, it was like part of me just died. It's been over 50 years but it still feels like yesterday. I was one of the lucky ones, I made it home in one piece. To honor Dave I named my son after him. Today my son is a Colonel in Special Forces and Commander of the 10th Special Forces Group...I think Dave would be proud and I know they would have been fast friends.

Admired classmate
I knew Bill in ROTC at the University of Dayton. He was in Pershing Rifles and Scabbard and Blade. Bill was a true soldier. He was daring and energetic all through training. When I heard of his death in combat, now many years ago, I was sobered and saddened. But I am encouraged to see his name here. It is important that remember the sacrifices that so many make to carry out the mission of the armed forces.
