Never left my mind....

Kirby Wilcox was in my father's battalion (1st of the 13th Infantry) in Baumholder, Germany. I believe it was 1965 or 1966. I remember Kirby and his wife sitting in our living room on a Sunday afternoon. They were such a fine couple and they both impressed me so much. I was a student that year. I met alot of young officers as they trained in Baumholder to go on to Viet Nam. Kirby stayed in my mind and I was crushed to hear that he had given his life. I am so glad to have found his name and to know where he is buried. Over all these years he has remained in my mind and in my heart. One of the great Americans.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain Charles Kirby Wilcox, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

If I should die...remembrances for CAPT. Charles Kirby WILCOX, USA...who made the ultimate sacrifice

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchnace, may therein comfort you.

The Last Time We Met

Kirby and I served in the 1st Cav in similar positions. Late in '67, we were briefly in An Khe at the same time, and stayed up late talking of children. Early AM, we both caught flights back to units. Have always remembered and mark 9 Jan, each year.
