The Best He Could Be
Ray was a friend of mine from high school. I was in Vietnam at the time of his death serving as a medic with the 25th Infantry. Ray was a short, stocky guy with a great personality and athleticism. He played football and wore number 33. He was Student Body President of San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California during his senior year. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). Ray was driven to excel in everything he did. He joined the Army and eventually became an officer with the Green Berets, which was typical of his desire to always be the best. He was mortally wounded by a very carefully crafted trip wire mine. As a point of interest, the first Medivac helicopter that attempted to reach Ray was shot down, with all aboard KIA. Ray did not survive long enough for evacuation. God bless you Ray, your family and your memory.
