Greatful brother

Each time I see your name I can't help but wonder if you were mistaken for me. They say if the round has your name on it there is nothing you can do. I am Sgt. Michael T.Whelan. 9th lnf. Div. Vietnam 1969-71 may you rest in peace.

Putting a face to the name...

In 7th grade (1987), I was fortunate enough to participate in a week long, school sponsored field trip to DC. The Vietnam Memorial was among the sights we visited. Many of my classmates pointed to fallen relatives they had never met; they purchased a crayon rub of their respective relative's name. I was touched by the gestures, despite not having a connection to anyone on The Wall. I purchased a rubbing of a fallen soldier who shared my sir name, Whelan. I have carried this young man with me for 35 years. I've always wondered who he was, and from where he came. I wondered what he looked like. ... I am overcome with emotion tonight. I finally know about Micheal Patrick, the soldier I've carried with me since childhood. .. Thank you for your service, Micheal.

Thank You

Dear Sgt Michael Whelan, Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. The 55th anniversary of the start of your tour just passed, but so did your 75th birthday, happy birthday. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is Advent, and Christmas is soon. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance, and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.
