Ground Casualty

Cu Chi Base Camp was a U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base in the Cu Chi District in Hau Nghia Province, RVN. Cu Chi was established in 1966 as the headquarters for 25th Infantry Division. The base was constructed adjacent to National Route QL-1, approximately 20 miles northwest of Saigon. It was located south of the Viet Cong stronghold known as the Iron Triangle, and was near, and in some cases above, the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels. During 1967-68, the 6th Battalion, 77th Artillery Regiment was based at Cu Chi providing supporting arms for divisional and allied operations. On January 16, 1968, an artilleryman from A Battery, 6-77th Arty died at Cu Chi after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. SP4 Larry T. Brent was found dead with an M16 rifle by his side. Military authorities believe the injury was intentionally self-inflicted. Brent, an Army volunteer, had been in Vietnam eight months. He was 21 years old. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
