Ground Casualty
PFC Rubin W. Westfall Jr. was an infantryman serving with A Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division. On August 12, 1970, PFC Westfall was in his fourth week in Vietnam. His unit, which had an attached company of tanks from C 2/34th Armor, were at the Cam Lo River in Quang Tri Province, RVN, just below the DMZ, the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam. During this time of the year, when there was no monsoon rainfall, the Cam Lo was not too deep and the current not very strong. While the tankers cleaned their vehicles, the infantrymen like Westfall were washing their clothes, bathing, and swimming. Westfall, who was wearing pants and in the middle of the river in waist-high water, suddenly disappeared and was not seen again. Helicopters searched along the river until sunset but were unable to locate him and he was presumed drowned. His body was located two days later. Because of the loss, the area was made off limits and the troopers were prohibited from entering the river. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and information provided by Gordon “Hippie” F.
