Almost on Gen. Ware's helicopter

Sometime near the end of my tour with D, 1/16, based at Lai Khe, I was offered a position as Gen. Ware's junior aide. At first lieutenant and about to rotate back to the states, I considered the offer seriously. Gen. Ware had pinned some awards on my fatigue uniform, and I wanted to continue to serve him. But I would have had to extend for six months, and I did not want to do that. My next post would be at Fort Lawton in Seattle as a reserve advisor. That was attractive.
Anyway, I turned down the offer to be Gen. Ware's aide, and I'm very glad I did. All on his helicopter, plus his dog, were lost. One of the pilots I had known slightly. He was an instructor at Fort Ord when I was there waiting to go to Officer Candidate School.
All I can say is that it was an honor to have met Gen. Ware. He was the real thing -- a senior officer who knew war and what he was doing.

Wrong labels on location

I have seen elsewhere that Loc Ninh was in Phuoc Long Province and another lists Loch Ninh Province. Loc Ninh was the Northern District of Binh Long Province and Binh Long Province was West of and bordered Phuoc Long Province.

No man left behind sir.

I never met you when alive. But on september 13 1968. The 1 /28 batallion was ehgaged in heavy fighting within mountain area between loc ninh and an loc which is 14 miles of rough mountain between. You were out directing battle from helicopter. The craft was taken down by anti aircraft .the craft burst in a ball of flames. 8 of us dropped all our gear and with no weapons we headed straight down the side of mountain from an loc . We carried bodies said to be general ware and aid. It was a long difficult task carrying bodies up the steep side back to an loc. I had just turned 19 and drafted in los angeles ca. And processed through the l a induction center as general ware di some 30 plus years before. I have never been able to rid myself of toll war had taken of such a great leader. The vision has been with me ever since. The division changed then as our inspiration was gone. King was picked up by another group. No one left behind. B co 1/28 bro. Rest in peace maverick.

This is a difficult memory

My father was in that helicopter with general Ware. LTC Henry M Oliver. The war took many fine men from their families that day and the world was forever changed.
