Dear Captain Ward: I remember very clearly what an exceptional guy you were when I had the privilege to serve under you in Vietnam in 1970. In May, the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be on exhibit in Seaside Park, Bridgeport, CT. A flag will be displayed on the lawn in front of the wall in honor and memory of you. CAPT Johnny N. Ward Jr., SGT Roger G. Holler, PFC Dewaine L. Brickman, and PFC Noel B Hernandez served with A Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. On January 16, 1971, elements of A Company were on a routine combat patrol in Binh Thuy Province, RVN, when a hostile force was encountered. A firefight ensued after which the enemy broke contact and attempted to flee. CAPT Ward quickly moved up to the point of contact and joined in the chase. At the same, the artillery lieutenant called in a fire mission on the fleeing enemy. Three or four of the rounds came in short and landed near A Company’s position. The mishaps killed two soldiers, mortally wounded two others (including CAPT Ward), and injured 11 more. The dead included SGT Holler, PFC’s Brickman and Hernandez, and CAPT Ward. I was reassigned to HHC from B Co, 2nd Bn 5th Cavalry after being wounded, and had the privilege to serve under Captain Ward in 1970. He was a fine officer, and an exceptionally nice guy. Rest in Peace, Captain Ward.
