Ground Casualty

SP4 James D. Waddell was an armor crewman serving with E Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry. On April 14, 1970, during his second tour of Vietnam, SP4 Waddell was killed while training a new driver in a Sheridan tank. He was sitting outside the vehicle on the sloped front giving instructions down through the escape hatch while the tank was moving. When the student suddenly downshifted, SP4 Waddell was thrown from the tank and run over before the driver could stop. He was posthumously promoted to sergeant after his death.
