Remembered

Dear Corporal Brandes,
Thank you for your service as an Aircraft Electronics Systems Technician. I started reading about you because I came from Flushing, Queens too. Then I read you went to Saint Nicks. I graduated from there too. You are older, so I did not know you, but I could have seen you in church, or in the upper grades. I wish you weren't on this wall. Rest in peace with the saints and angels. Saint Nicholas of Tolentine is a patron saint of those who passed. I hope he led you to paradise.

remember you Kenny

Went to grammar school with you at St.Nicks.

Class of '62..........you passed a short time later.

A short run from grammar school to war.

Ran into two nuns about a year ago, also from St. Nicks. They remembered you, and they knew your fate.

You have not been forgotten, even now in 2015.

rest easy my old friend, and thank you.

Final Mission of CPL Kenneth N. Brandes

In July and August of 1968, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161 (HMM-161) was participating in Operation Lancaster II, a 3rd Marine Division operation of multi-battalion search-and-clear maneuvers in the Ca Lu area. Almost every day the squadron missions included inserting and extracting reconnaissance teams. Frequently this had to be done under heavy enemy fire. On August 22nd, while trying to insert a reconnaissance team, CPL Kenneth N. Brandes, a crew chief aboard a CH-46, was killed and two other crewmen were wounded.[Taken from archive.org]
