Many years later I touched his name on the Wall in DC
It was my sad duty as a Navy Lieutenant while recruiting in the Chicago region for Navy Officer programs in 1969 and 1970 to on occasion be called on to notify families of the injury and/or death of a love one. For Doug I was one of several Navy officers that brought the tragic news. The family first was informed of his injury and we stayed in touch. Days later, when I rang the doorbell where Mom and Sis were living and they heard my voice on the intercom it became a moment none of the three of us would ever forget. I later delivered the leather bound scrapbook containing photos of the burial at sea and the nautical chart marking his final resting place. This remains among the saddest and most difficult tasks in my lifetime of 80+ years.

do not stand at my grave and weep......
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am not there. I did not die.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear LTJG Douglas Dean Vaughan, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
