Final Mission of SP4 Larry C. Vallelonga
On May 30, 1969, pilot WO1 Thomas E. Hays and aircraft commander CW2 John M. Hohman, with passenger SP4 Larry C. Vallelonga (a Public Information Officer), were aboard U.S. Army helicopter OH-6A (tail number 67-16387) when it came under enemy small arms (AK-47) fire in an area known as “Loach Alley” in the Binh Duong Province in III Corps. The aircraft, from D Troop (Air), 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division, caught fire and crashed. All three crewmen suffered burn-related injuries. WO1 Hays died the same day as the crash. CW2 Hohman, with 2nd and 3rd burns over 80% of his body and bullet wounds from the attack, succumbed to his injuries the following day. SP4 Vallelonga, with burns over 55% of his body, died one month later. [Taken from vhpa.org]
