Ground Casualty
PFC Thomas R. Brady was a Military Policeman serving with the 218th MP Company and was assigned duties in the coastal city of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. On November 2, 1970, PFC Brady and his partner attempted to apprehend and detain two U.S. military deserters. When the armed deserters threatened his partner, Brady pulled his weapon and drew fire from one of the AWOLs. He was fatally wounded by the gunfire. The deserters briefly escaped but were caught a few days later after Vietnamese citizens informed Military Police authorities of their location. They were captured and held at Nha Trang Air Force Base before being transferred to the U.S. military stockade at Long Binh Post. The two were prosecuted by a military court, and at least one of the murderers was sentenced to twenty years in prison. During the trial, Brady’s partner voluntarily returned to Vietnam after his tour had ended to serve as a witness for the prosecution.
