Namesakes
The name Randy Turner will always be an especially important one for me. My father grew up in Spokane with Randy as a close friend, and has shared much about their experiences together in school. They attended Eastern Washington State College together for a time and stayed in close contact. My Dad was drafted in 1967 and served his country in Vietnam in single tour, returning home in the spring of 1969. The war and Randy's death motivated my Dad to find a life rich with meaning. After marrying my mother in 1971, three lively boys rounded out the family in the coming years. When I was born in 1974, they decided I would be given the name of his close friend and also that of an injured soldier that Dad served with during his tour. I have done my best to honor both men, and in my 27 year career as a history teacher I have shared this story with thousands of students. Thank you Randy and also Vance for your service to this country and for inspiring me to serve my community as an educator since 1998.

God’s messenger
Randy and I were EWSC students together majoring in business of Radio and Television Communications. As the Vietnam Nam war heated Randy was already in ROTC and urged me countless times to join him. “They pay your college, and give you a great retirement”, he said. But I had a job at a nearby TV station and with my foot in that door joined the National Guard. We graduated in mid 66’. I read news about the war in Vietnam to Spokane. Randy went to Vietnam.
Randy is powerful example of what sacrifice is to those of us who love God’s gifts of freedoms and knew Randy. My messages were written by AP and UPI.
But God used Randy to tell us our freedoms are not free. That’s the real message. Are we listening?
