Final Mission of SP4 Daniel R. Troye
During the first quarter of 1970, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) “Skytroopers” conducted operations throughout its area of responsibility in Tay Ninh, Phuoc Long, Binh Long, Binh Duong, and Bien Hoa Provinces with the objective of interdicting enemy infiltration routes, denying enemy access to the population centers, and neutralizing enemy forces. Operations in the Bu Gia Map area (12 kilometers [7.4 miles] southeast of the Cambodian border in Phuoc Long Province) were intended to destroy cache sites and interdict enemy supply movements along the Jolley Road (Trail), a North Vietnamese Army/Viet Cong (NVA/VC) infiltration route running south from Cambodia. Heavy enemy contact was made in the area on March 28, 1970, approximately ten kilometers (6.2 miles) north of Djamap Airfield by A Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment during a ground bomb damage assessment mission following bombing by U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortresses. The Skytroopers entered a VC base camp where they received heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from an estimated enemy company believed to be the 174th Regiment, 5th VC Division. The subsequent fighting killed 44 NVA at the cost of six American lives with ten others wounded. The lost personnel included (from A-1/12th) PFC Darrell A. Cameron (posthumously promoted to Corporal), SP4 Fred G. Kovarik (posthumously promoted to Sergeant), SP4 Daniel R. Troye (posthumously promoted to Sergeant), SP4 James T. Watson (posthumously promoted to Sergeant); (from C-1/12th) SGT Kenneth J. Garski; and (from HHC-1/12th) medic SP4 Dennis M. Schultz (posthumously promoted to Sergeant). Danny
Thank you for your honorable service and your ultimate sacrifice, Danny. I have but hazy memories of you when I was such a little girl. I remember you spinning me around - holding me by the hands and twirling me through the air while you laughed! That is my favorite! I also remember being at your mom and dad's on Ave C when they put the tri folded American Flag into a triangle shaped box made of glass and wood next to your picture in a place of honor.
May you continue to rest in the deepest peace.
