Sometimes Fran is in my mind more often. It brings me close to tears to know that he is remembered and encouraging people after all these years. He was an encourager! I think he would appreciate the thoughts and opportunities to serve.

Air Force Academy
I just wanted to put this out there: I'm a new fourth class cadet at the Air Force Academy. During basic training, which I just finished, we were told to pick a name on the fallen heroes wall. Captain FW Townsend was my chosen name. His memory got me through basic training, and I will never forget what he did for me and our country. Thank you Captain Francis Townsend.

Thought of Fran again today
Odd how these memories return; tonight I thought of Fran, we were classmates at the USAF Academy. He was ahead of me in the RF4C, and we ran into each other at Clark AB, Phillipines in summer of 1972. We had a beer together, he was flying reconnaissance with the 14 TRS at Udorn, I was flying transports in and out of the war zone. Fran talked of flying over North Vietnam, and over Hanoi - he faced it with much courage, despite the high danger. I felt his loss deeply later that year when I learned of his loss. Pilot Bill Guantt told me the story of his loss.
After many years in the RF4C myself, including a combat tour at Udorn a couple of years following Fran, I still recall his courage, and his loss. A fine man.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear Captain Francis Wayne Townsend, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
