Remembering An American Hero

Dear CPL Gary Chester Towle, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Saddest night of all

We were the only two New Ehglanders in Co.B, 1st platoon, 2/327th. You had your wife's friend write to me regularly. When you were hit I couldn't bring myself to put in writing what happened to you that night. When I returned home, I went up to New Hampshire to see your wife & her friend & apologize.
We had a new man with us that day. That night was his first in the field & no one knows if he was trying to play hero or just was terrified out of his mind, but while he was on his first turn at guard duty, he saw you going to wake the next man at your position & he open fired, killing you. You were the only one in our platoon hit by "friendly" fire that entire year. He was put on the same helicopter with you, never to return to our platoon. I never saw or met him. I was ashamed to tell them that one of our own men shot you. At least they were relieved to know how you died & that you didn't suffer. To know that you had gone through so much only to end that way brought so much rage & sadness to your friends in the 1st platoon.
