Remembering Uncle Duane On This Memorial Day Weekend

When uncle Duane came to visit us in Oklahoma before leaving for basic training, even at only 6 years old, I remember noticing the close relationship that he and my mom, Shelby, his 11 year older sister, had together. She has always said that she helped raise him since her mother had to work outside in the fields. When we received notification of his death, I remember for the first time. at less than 8 years old, the impact that death and war can bring to families. At the same time, I remember how he has brought influence to me showing how important sacrifice, honor, courage, and service are in life. I think of his example often, but especially on this weekend every year.
