Andre lived next door to me I was 6 years old.His mom picked us up at school everyday.He was my best friend,and I loved him.one day his mom was late picking us up so Andre decided that we were going to just walk home.The school back then was on little mill rd which was later a masonic lodge.of course I would have followed Andre anywhere.we got our Butt's whipped and told not to ever do that again.LOL.I will always love you Andre

I met Andre when we were both seniors at Frankfurt American High School (Fkft a/M, W. Germ.) and on the wrestling team. I remember best from that year his dry wit and outrageous sense of humor. We both went to UGA in '66 and in ROTC he joined the Pershing Rifles while I joined the Counter-Guerrilla Company. He, a Sociology major, continued while I, a Psych major, dropped out and drifted into the anti-war faction. We had so many long, late-night-cheap-wine discussions about the war and the different avenues we chose toward a visionary world of peace. I remember a 1st Air Cav Xmas card from him decrying the war he found while in country, and mourn him every time the subject comes up. RIP my good friend.

On July 9, 1972, BGEN Richard J. Tallman landed in the city of An Loc, Binh Long Province, RVN, with several of his key staff officers to observe the progress of ARVN operations and coordinate a reinforcement effort during the NVA Spring Offensive of 1972. Two advisors from the 18th ARVN Division, MAJ Joe Hallum and CPT Willbanks met them. As the helicopter departed, a lone enemy artillery shell struck the general’s party. Three American officers accompanying Tallman, LTC Stanley J. Kuick, MAJ Peter M. Bentson, and 1LT John A. Todd, and Sergeant Son, an ARVN interpreter, were killed instantly. General Tallman, MAJ Hallum, and CPT Willbanks, were wounded in the blast. A medivac, Dustoff 79 from the 57th Medical Company (Air Ambulance), evacuated them to the 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon, where the general, mortally wounded, died on the operating table. He was the last U.S. Army general to die in South Vietnam. Hallum and Willbanks later recovered from their wounds. Kuick was posthumously promoted to colonel. Dear 1LT John Andrew Todd, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

At long last, I am able to say good-bye to John. It was my pleasure to have known John when he worked with the ambulance service located in the emergency room of Athens General Hospital while we were UGA students. I worked part time as a Ward Clerk from 1968-1970. At the time I married to Ron Peevy from Buford, Ga. He came in one night to pick me up and exclaimed, "Andre", I said that is John. What a surprise that I worked with a high school friend of his. We were deeply saddened by his death. I pay my respect to John when I go to the wall. The Moving Wall will be at Ft. Benning, GA. which is nearby and I will visit. I wanted his family to know that he has not been forgotten by me and never will.
