Remembering An American Hero

Dear CPL Thomas Massie Boyd III, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Accident Information on U.S. Marine Corps helicopter UH-34D tail number 150254

On May 13, 1968 this aircraft from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 362 (HMM 362) suffered an engine failure and crashed into the South China Sea. The accident occurred while taking off from the USS Sanctuary after offloading one emergency medevac. The engine failure forced the pilot to ditch in the ocean. All members of the crew exited the aircraft safely and were recovered by the Sanctuary's rescue team with the exception of the gunner, CPL Thomas M. Boyd III, who perished.
