An American Hero
My family and Bob’s family were close friends when we lived in Yarmouth in the late 1950s to 1965. We followed Bob’s time at Bowdoin and delighted when he’d come by our summer cottage each morning making deliveries for Nissen Bakery. Two years after moving from Maine to Wisconsin, I was reminded of my respect and admiration for Bob a month after beginning my Freshman year in college when I learned of Bob’s untimely and tragic passing in battle in Vietnam. I have thought numerous times of how Bob’s life was cut so short while serving his country.

A Baby Bro Turns Age 70
Bob, your would-be birthday is number 77 this year. I think of what could have been, but not very often or I’d loose my marbles. You put more of life into your 24 years than most. Your future was limitless in any direction chosen. However, you chose SERVICE, SACRIFICE, HONOR. It all ended too quickly with a single bullet and the suffering of your devoted girlfriend, family, friends and nation. We love you, so, we don’t mind the pain. We live on, but tears are always behind our facade every day. Love you Bob Boyd.

Lt. Boyd was killed with me 52 years ago and I still think about him often. I think about all the things he has missed like computers, I-Phones, nice new cars. What a shame.

Friend and Baseball Teammate
Bobby Boyd and I grew up competing against each other in basketball and baseball in neighboring towns. We had great fun as teammates on All Star Baseball Teams. (He at 2nd, I at SS). He was a wonderful person, a super athlete, a brilliant Bowdoin College graduate, and outstanding soldier. I followed him in 1969 to Vietnam and also served with the 525th. It’s been 50 years and I still think of him. So sad.
