Ground Casualty

EN3 Thomas W. Hill was an Engineman serving aboard the repair ship USS Tutuila (ARG-4). On February 23, 1968, EN3 Hill was injured in a fall while embarked in the Tutuila. Reportedly, the crew was enjoying a ship event with a picnic when Hill had to be pulled from the water after being in distress and drowning. An ambulance was summoned and was sent from a local U.S. Army base. Hill was loaded into the ambulance accompanied by the ship’s doctor, LT John L. Saunders, GMGC Allan F. Sullivan, the event coordinator, and SFC Horris G. Robinson, Hill's supervisor. While enroute to the 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vung Tau, the Army ambulance in was involved in an accident. All four sailors suffered fatal injuries in the incident. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and information provided by Guy Veni (May 2018)]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear GMGC Allan Francis Sullivan, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
