Fellow Soldier

Bill, you and I went through basic training and advanced infantry training at Fort Lewis Washington. Then we went to Fort Benning Georgia for jump school. After seven months of training, you decided not to continue to Special Forces with me. You wanted to go to Vietnam and serve our country. You left our group and went to Vietnam six weeks later. I will never forget the friendship and your determination and tenacity in training. You were the ultimate soldier who sacrificed his life. I remember you now 56 years later. You were born 9/29/1950 and passed away 9/25/1970, four days before your 20th birthday. You were much too young. I visited the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC and scratched your name on 7W/88 indelibly imprinted in my mind forever.

Always have wished I could have spoken to someone who was with you on that fateful day. See you in heaven.

I honor your name with my name - William D Bothwell

Bill,

I never knew you, but I feel as if you have always been the uncle that has always been there providing support and guidance. You were my Father's (Alan Weaver) best friend and my namesake and I look forward to meeting you one day with our Father in Heaven. I finally was able to visit the wall in DC and took my boys to see your name and help pass on your memory to them. Thank you for your service to our country and your bravery, thank you for being my dad's best friend for all those years and thank you for the wonderful name you gave me.

Honor Duty Country

Although Bill was a year ahead of me at Lee and only having one class with Bill I recall Bill as a quiet and humble individual. At a time when the draft and the war in Vietnam were at a height of political protest Bill entered military service and trained with the Special Forces. I can only imagine Bill’s reasoning for his decision to sign that blank check but I know he did it for his beliefs in country. Bill’s later death in Vietnam was a humbling revelation for me and to some degree lead me to volunteer for the draft. On this Memorial Day fifty four years later, rest in peace William David Bothwell.
