Final Mission of PFC Johnny B. Boston

Operation Lincoln (March 25 – April 8, 1966) was a 1st and 3d Brigades, 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division search and destroy and reconnaissance in force operation against the same North Vietnamese Army units that the 1st Cavalry Division fought in the Battle of the Ia Drang (November 14–18, 1965) near Plei Me and the Chu Pong Massif in Pleiku and Darlac Provinces, RVN. During combat operations on April 1st, Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment, II Field Force was moved by CH-47 helicopters to a forward artillery position near Plei Lao Tchin, 18 kilometers southwest of Duc Co Airfield in Pleiku Province in support of 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division search and destroy operations adjacent to the Cambodian border. During the same day, an officer from Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 1/14th, 2LT Richard P. Rand, was killed by small arms fire in ground action with the enemy. Two days later, the 2/9th Arty position was mortared by the enemy. During the morning attack, approximately 60 rounds impacted at the firing position. One artilleryman, PFC Johnny B. Boston, was killed and three other personnel were wounded. Countermortar fire was immediately returned in the general direction of the incoming rounds with unobserved results. Aerial Rocket Artillery helicopters were requested and came on station but were unable to locate enemy targets.
