The Best of America

I was in Larry's platoon in Vietnam. He was a radio operator with HQ Company, 3rd Marine Regiment, not H&S Co., 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines as listed above. One afternoon Sergeant Howell, our platoon sergeant, said the he needed a radio operator for a listening post and he picked one of the radio operators. That operator complained that he was a short timer with only two weeks left. Without any hesitation Larry Borschel spoke up. "I'll go." He never returned. I will always remember those words. "I'll go."

I'll go!"

I was in Larry's platoon in Vietnam, I was a new guy, I'd only been there two weeks and barely new Larry. Our platoon sergeant, Sgt. Howell, came into our tent, stating that Lt. Schwartz needed a radio operator to go out with him to a listening post.

Sgt. Howell picked a guy I only remember by his nickname "Duck." Duck commented that his time in Vietnam was almost over and he was scheduled to go home in two weeks. Before there was time for Sgt. Howell to respond to Duck, a voice came from the far corner of the tent. "I'll go!" It was Larry Borschel. Larry never returned. Those words "I'll go!" represent the best of the United States of America.
