Remembering An American Hero
Dear Major Hallie William Smith, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

You NOT be forgotten
Thoughts of you always bring a smile to my heart. How fortunate I was to have met you in college, married you after we graduated and had four wonderful years together before you were sent to Vietnam in 1967. There is rarely a day that goes by without a happy memory of our short life together. The last time I saw you, you were 25 years old and I am now 70. Will love you forever.

MIA Wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Portland, OR
A component of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Portland, OR is a black granite wall which lists the 40 names of Oregon soldiers still missing in action as of its placement November 11, 1987. However, as the process of recovery of missing soldiers continues, an asterisk is placed on the wall next to the name each time remains of the missing are recovered and identified.

If I should die...remembrances for MAJ. Hallie William SMITH, USAF...who made the ultimate sacrifice
If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.
