Cary Smith, my Hickory Tavern High School friend

Cary,

I will always remember your gentle ways, your soft voice, your kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor which kept me company on that old yellow school bus as you sat beside me to and from the basketball games. I can still see you running around the Hickory Tavern basketball court as we cheerleaders yelled, "Cary Cary, he's our man, if he can't do it nobody can!"

Our world dimmed to learn of your passing so far from home. You were oh so brave, and I thank you for your service. Linton Mann (your football co-captain) & I have you forever in our hearts...RIP sweet friend, we will meet again. <3

Fallen Brother

Sgt. Cary J. Smith was my brother. His death was a dark day in the lives of our family. He will always be remembered for the thoughtful, loving person that he was.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Cary Joseph Smith, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

My Friend Cary

Cary and I were classmates from the 5th grade until graduation at Hickory Tavern High. We played baseball, basketball, and football. We also double dated and were best friends. He was just a great guy. I remember when he bought that white 50 Ford convertable; I remember his parents and the last time I saw him at Mr. Southern's store on US 25 at Princeton.

I think of him all the time and the great times we had as well as the plans that we talked about. What a waste.
