Lenny Borchard - your short life on earth did have meaning and your spirit lives on.
I knew Lenny Borchard as a friend and co-worker in the Big "D" grocery store in Spencer, IA. Lenny was friendly, kind, giving, and always had a smile on his face. I was away at college at the time that I heard of his being killed in Viet Nam and came home for the funeral. What a sad time it was especially since I felt that Lenny had so much to offer in this life. My only consolation is that he probably had a belief that what he was doing in Viet Nam was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, our society was so confused about what was right that we let people like Lenny Borchard down! Whenever I drive by the cemetary south of Milford, IA, I always remember Lenny as if it was only yesterday that we were stocking shelves or carrying out groceries in the Big "D". On this memorial day weekend, 1999, it's appropriate that I remember an American who gave his life many years ago for something that many today consider not that big of a deal. I however feel that Lenny's was the ultimate sacrifice and deserves never to be forgotten.
