Ground Casualty
I Field Force, Vietnam was a corps-level command of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. A component of U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV), its headquarters were located at Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. I Field Force's area of responsibility was Military Region II which comprised the twelve provinces of Vietnam's Central Highlands. The command controlled a number of divisions and brigades of combat units and artillery groups. PFC Edward C. Sims was an artilleryman from C Battery, 6th Battalion, 32nd Artillery Regiment, a I Field Force supporting arms unit. Sims had been in Vietnam just one week when he drowned on May 21, 1968, while recreational swimming at a beach near Phu Hiep, 13 kilometers (8.0 miles) southeast of Tuy Hoa in Phu Yen Province. He reportedly went out into the surf and never returned to shore. His remains were recovered the following day and transported to the 91st Evacuation Hospital at Chu Lai where postmortem studies confirmed he died from drowning. Sims, an Army volunteer, was 22 years old. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Barbara A. Sims, and his mother and father. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
